Overview

Design professionals often struggle when it comes to running their business. We tend to focus heavily on the practice of design vs. the design of practice. It may seem counterintuitive, but if we want to increase our effectiveness, we must shift focus to the business aspects of practice. These three sessions will outline the key elements of Positioning, Measuring, Aligning and Pricing that are fundamental to sustaining a strong business and ultimately a strong practice.

Session One will explore three positioning typologies and then introduce seven key financial metrics. You’ll walk away from this session knowing what effective positioning looks like and you’ll be able to start measuring and benchmarking your overall business performance.

Session Two will start with a brief recap of the first session. A scoreboard model will be presented to keep the seven metrics top-of-mind as you lead your practice. Once positioning is underway, the focus shifts to aligning your operating system with that positioning. A hypothetical case study will be used to illustrate how positioning, metrics, and alignment are interconnected and fundamental to the design of your business.

Session Three will focus on Pricing your work. Pricing is typically the highest impact alignment activity to focus on as you work on the design of your practice. The session will provide an overview of value-based pricing.

Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:

  • recognize what effective positioning looks like,
  • absorb key design firm metrics using a financial scoreboard,
  • employ tactics to align operations with their market position,
  • see how positioning, metrics, and alignment are interconnected, via a hypothetical case study, and
  • understand the principles of value-based pricing.
