Egress, Exiting and Occupant Loads

This is an intermediate to advanced level seminar which identifies the fundamentals of egress and exiting, as well as how occupant loads affect exiting from suites and floor areas.Prerequisites are either a good working knowledge of the Building Code or the Building Code Fundamentals seminar.

This seminar includes the following topics:
• occupant load determination,
• exit capacity calculations,
• brief overview of time-based exiting concept,
• requirements for exit facilities,
• egress from rooms, suites, mezzanines and overall floor areas,
• application of travel distance to suites vs. floor areas,
• security considerations in relation to egress and exiting.

PRESENTER: KIM KARN, KIMBERLY KARN CONSULTING INC.

Kim brings over 16 years of experience working with Provincial, National & International Building Codes and regulatory standards. Kim refined her skills as a Code consultant in Ontario, and subsequently Alberta, with Larden Muniak Consulting Inc. Kim then provided in-house consulting services for Riddell Kurcazba Architecture Engineering Interior Design Ltd. before incorporating her own consulting firm, Kimberly Karn Consulting Inc., in October 2015. With this knowledge, Kim has provided analysis of compliance for existing and proposed building designs, focusing on life safety and fire safety. Kim has performed Code reviews, developed alternative solutions and has conducted audits and life safety studies for many projects including, high rise office, multi-family residential, hotels, hospitals, care facilities, arenas, exhibition halls & trade centres, as well as many industrial buildings. Utilizing analytical problem-solving and negotiation skills, Kim builds consensus between design & construction teams and local authorities to implement variances that meet the intent of the Code and the clients’ needs. Kim is experienced at developing critical cost-effective solutions for unexpected complications that arise on-site during construction projects.
